St James Power House

Drinking WATERFALL which melted the straw!

Word of advice: Never order Waterfall from St James! The waiters are incapable of preparing such complicated drink.

On the night of 26 Jan 2006 - Lily's farewell.

Can you spot which one is Lily, Wil the Wombat and Candice?

...the one who'd definitely want to revisit St James

Pan's Labyrinth
Rating: ***1/2
Cast: Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, Ivana Baquero Genre: Fantasy

Watched on 2 Feb 2007 at Vivo City with Chup.

The movie was not as scary or gory as I thought it would be. It was more like a child's fantasy and fairytale. And I enjoyed it :)

Apocalypto
Rating: **

Watched on DVD in Jan 2007. Apocalypto was released almost at the same time with Pan's Labyrinth. This one, I have been warned that it is bloody & sadistic. Indeed it was. That was the reason why I refused to watch it in the cinema. Mel Gibson's last movie, The Passion of the Christ, was so gory, Chup and I walked out of the cinema. To me, Apocalypto is just gore for the sake of gore. Storyline is very weak.

New TV
Brand: LG
Model: 42PC1R

We finally purchased a new TV for our living room. It took a long time before Chup finally settle on this one.

Plasma or LCD?
Which brand?
What resolution?
Where is cheaper?
Wait for Xmas?
Xmas is over, wait for CNY?

These are among the various questions bugging us prior to the purchase.

Finally, on 3 Feb 07 we made our way to Mustafa (at Little India) to buy one. And this seems like the best available choice.
S$2,399 with S$200 Giant/Shop n Save Vouchers.

AV (Alexandra Village) Food Centre
Rating: ****
Address: Blk 120 Bukit Merah Lane I, Singapore
Price: S$6/pax

After acquiring a copy of "Makansutra Guide 2007" recently, Chup and I will now go around to verify some of the food places featured in the book. After all, it's always good to have a check and balance system :) AV Food Centre has more than 10 stalls featured in the book! Furthermore, it is quite near our place. So this place has become our frequent dinner hangout nowadays.

A must have for this often stuffy and hot food centre would be a refreshing glass of iced avocado juice. There are 2 stalls (both facing the road and block 119) competing fiercely, though only 1 of them is featured in Makansutra. Tried both stalls and they are equally good.

Next is this charsiew rice stall. Again, do not be fooled by its appearance.

Fried Hokkien Mee.
Ensure you get the one with the banana leave plate. The other stall with green rounded plate is really bad.

Made on-the-spot Chee Cheong Fun from the Dim Sum Stall.

...the one who has also tried the Rong Guang BBQ stall. Quite tasty but not worth the fuss and long wait I think.

Ayam Bakar Ojolali (Ojolali Grilled Chicken)
Rating: ****
Add: Lucky Plaza #03-39
Price: S$6/pax
Tel: 6235 3598

The hunt started when I chanced upon this article on the TODAY paper.
It turns out, the hunt was definitely worth hunting for.

Being a regular here at Lucky Plaza to eat at Ayam Penyet Ria, I actually didn't know that another gem exists here. It gives me a good alternative as Ria is always very crowded. In terms of quality, it is a very close fight between the two. Pricing of food at the 2 places is also very similar.

Here are some of the must-eat items:

Young coconut drink

Rawon (Beef Stew)
Don't be fooled by its appearance!

Ikan Kipas
(Deep fried gurame fish)

Fried chicken

And last but not least, the name of the restaurant itself:
"Ayam Bakar Ojolali" - the ultimate Chef's Recommendation

My littlest cousin Wilfred

Born on 5 June 2005, these photos of Wilfred are taken in Dec 2006. So he's about 1.5 years old here. Very lazy to walk and prefer to just sit and crawl! Tsk tsk tsk...

Sumptuous Meal

Chup and I always look forward to the time when my mom or Auntie Rose pay us a visit in Singapore.

Why?

Because our house would be sparkling clean and we are always well fed with home-cooked food!

Come to think of it, it's been quite a while since Iany of them visited me.

The last time Aunt Rose was here was in Dec 2006. And I came up with a brilliant idea. I suggested that she cooks some of our favourite dishes and freeze them in small portions (See picture). When she is gone, I would just need to thaw and heat up the dishes and cook some rice.

The results is as good as freshly cooked!! The taste and quality is not compromised by the freezing at all. Maybe that is why frozen sperms are as capable of fertilizing an egg as fresh sperms?

Ok, I guess I digressed...

Anyway, like I said, the end result is sumptuous! :)

...the one who'd be missing Aunt Rose who won't be coming to Singapore for a while. Why? Because she just started a food business in Jakarta

Esplanade

There is this beautiful part of Esplanade that one will never get to enjoy unless you happen to be watching a show at either the Concert Hall or the Theatre. Despite some negative comments about the building looking like durians or eyes of a fly, I think the view of the roof structure is quiet amazing. They deserve to be called an engineering wonder, don't they?

Toji-An Guest House

Remember the unforgettable experience I had in Kyoto?

I have posted my full review of the place at www.tripadvisor.com, complete with photographic evidence.
I hope to warn potential customers from venturing into this gate of Hell.

Click this link to find out more. What you see and experience is far far different from what is promised on their website!

My Fair Lady - the Musical
Rating: ***
Venue: Esplanade Singapore

Watched on 10 Jan 2007 with Li, Bur, Wil and Chup. We were split 3 on one side and 2 on the other at the circle seats. For the price we paid (about S$40), it was definitely worth the money.

The title of the musical is "My FAIR Lady" but the lady we had was far from "FAIR". She was rather old and her boyfriend looks so young, she can be his mother!
The other problem we had were the 2 very sweaty main casts. Dark sweaty hunks would be a different story altogether but these two were rather old, plump and saggy... :@

Apart from that, the singing was great. The songs were familiar and close to the heart and it'd be irresistible to sing along with the cast.
